Ecoefficiency of disposal in Bavaria, Germany and Switzerland
Update of the ecoefficiency comparison
Working on behalf of the Bavarian State Environmental Agency, bifa has extended and updated the ecoefficiency comparison of the disposal structures of Bavaria, Germany and Switzerland, first carried out in 2003.
The results from 2003 showed that in comparison with the disposal structures of Switzerland and the German average, the Bavarian way of organising its waste industry was best in terms of its ecoefficiency. Following the data update, carried out as part of the current survey, the balancing of additional material flows and consideration of the ban on landfilling untreated wastes, the disposal structures are clearly moving closer together with regard to their ecoefficiency.
Compared to Germany's disposal structure, Bavaria's still has a slightly better overall ecological result, but at the same time is linked to slightly higher total costs. Switzerland's disposal structure is somewhat less ecoefficient. The causes are less environmental relief in the overall ecological result, coupled with comparatively high disposal costs.
A detailed description of the project is given in bifa-Text No. 38.
