Environmental effects of regional disposal services
Life cycle assessment and environmental-related advantages
HEINZ GmbH & Co. KG (HEINZ) provides regional disposal services for the collection, transport, sorting and forwarding for recovery or disposal. The company disposes of the wastes of businesses and local authorities and where possible passes them on to companies within the region. The focus is on strengthening local disposal structures. In cooperation with bifa, within the scope of a life cycle assessment it was possible to determine the environmental-related advantages of this strategy.
Seven environmental impact categories of HEINZ
bifa determined the environmental effects on the basis of seven environmental impact categories. Climate protection and the conservation of fossil fuels are currently much-discussed impact categories. In addition, other environmental effects such as acidification and the risk to man and the environment are also included in the consideration.
The disposal of more than 223,000 tonnes of wastes from households and industry, to which HEINZ contributes within the network of the regional disposal industry, protects the climate and relieves the environment. By providing secondary metals, regranulates and energy, more environmental impacts are prevented than arise along the disposal chain. The disposal of wastes from households and businesses relieves the climate by approx. 42,000 tonnes CO2. This is equal to the quantity of CO2 caused by approx. 3,300 citizens within a year. The energy produced from the wastes can cover the annual requirements of a small town. HEINZ has a modern, low-pollution transport fleet, which minimises environmental impacts.
Since 2011, the fleet of more than 100 vehicles has only included vehicles in pollution classes Euro-3 and -5. The environmental impact associated with the modern fleet is 22 % lower than the environmental impact that would be caused by a purely Euro-3 fleet. Consistent changeover of all vehicles to the Euro-5 exhaust standard opens up an additional environmental relief potential of 29 %.
HEINZ provides its disposal services in a total of nine Upper and Lower Bavarian districts. The whole disposal area extends roughly between the districts of Kelheim, Mühldorf am Inn and Bad Tölz. With five locations in this area, the HEINZ company has very strong regional roots and always endeavours to provide disposal services with the shortest routes. While HEINZ mainly takes the wastes it collects to companies in the region, the transport distances required by competitors are often far longer. National shipment of wastes has a substantial impact on the environment.
For a distance of only 200 km the environmental impact of transport increases 3.6-fold, for 400 km distance it increases 6.4-fold compared to transport to a regional recovery firm.
bifa summarised the project results for HEINZ in an environmental brochure, which is available free of charge from www.heinz-entsorgung.de
