Waste separation on large housing estates
bifa carried out a project on waste separation on large housing estates lasting several years on behalf of the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment ("Bayerischen Umweltministerium"). The measures, developed together with residents of housing estates, achieved a reduction in the proportion of plastic and metal packaging, glass and paper in the residual waste by 30 to 40 %.
Optimization of the qualiy of separation
The separation quality in the recycling bins was also improved considerably. For example, the proportion of impurities in the yellow (plastics) bin reduced by around 35 to 40 %. It is difficult to make residents understand that the yellow bin is for plastic packaging only but, for example, not plastic toys. The often misunderstood rule that cooked food may not be thrown in the biowaste bin in Augsburg will probably be changed by the City of Augsburg.
A detailed description of the project is given in bifa-Texts No. 35-37.
