KUMAS UMWELTNETZWERK together with the cooperation partners AU Consult GmbH, Bayerisches Landesamt für Umwelt and bifa Umweltinstitut GmbH sent an invite to attend the 20th Bavarian Waste and Landfill Days in Augsburg, on 20 and 21 March 2019.

In addition to other interesting talks, a report was also given on the topic of “foreign matter in biowaste”.

In the interview with augsburg.tv, Sarah Tschachtli, project manager for sustainable municipal waste management, explained that in 2017 and 2018, the biowaste within the joint local waste authority (Abfallzweckverband - AZV) Augsburg had been examined by bifa Umweltinstitut for its interfering and foreign substance content. The analyses showed that plastics – especially in the form of plastic bin bags, repeatedly end up in the biowaste. Other foreign matter such as nappies and other hygiene products, paper and textiles are also repeatedly thrown away in the organic waste bin (“biobin”).
bifa microbiologist Dr. rer. nat. Klaus Hoppenheidt explained that such foreign substances are frequently carriers of contaminants and do not belong in the treatment process and compost.
