Energy use plan for the town of Unterschleißheim
The topic of energy has long since been addressed by the town of Unterschleißheim. The town of Unterschleißheim made its first political decisions to use geothermal energy for a local district heating network in 1999. It achieved pioneering work. The wholly-owned subsidiary, Geothermie Unterschleißheim AG (GTU), has been connected to the grid since 2003. With this act, it helped renewable energy to emerge from the infancy stage, especially in Southern Germany. For example, in recent years, other measures such as the integrated energy and climate protection concept (Integrierte Energie- und Klimaschutzkonzept – IEKK) and a heat atlas have been implemented by GTU. A further important step towards achieving climate protection goals and implementing the turn of energy policies was taken with the preparation of an energy use plan.
Energy saving, energy efficiency and the expansion of renewable energy are an indispensable building block for climate protection and security of supply of a municipality. Based on the results of studies already undertaken and projects implemented, during the course of the energy use plan, existing data gaps will be closed and merged to form an overarching masterplan. In a first step, energy and CO2 balances were drawn up for the main sectors, evaluated and broken down according to different energy sources. The potential energy saving, energy efficiency and forms of renewable energy were then evaluated in the context of individual subareas.
The energy use plan now available, summarises the results of the evaluation of Unterschleißheim’s energy infrastructure in a prepared and legible form. It is an important planning instrument, to purposefully coordinate the expansion of renewable energy, to push ahead with the optimisation of heat use and to promote energy saving and efficiency measures.
The procedure and the content elaborations of the energy use plan for the Town of Unterschleißheim are based on the „Leitfaden Energienutzungsplan“ (Energy Use Plan Guidelines) (StMUG, StMWIVT, OBB). It is committed to meeting the quality standards of the energy use plans JV (ARGE “Energienutzungspläne”) of the Bavarian Gemeindetag (umbrella organisation for Bavarian municipalities) and is based on the tender documents for the energy use plan of the Town of Unterschleißheim.
When developing the measures, we put particular emphasis on their practicability. The timely involvement of regional stakeholders enabled successful local implementation.
Recommended measures and classic approaches to solutions were drawn up to precisely suit the local circumstances:
- Expanding renewable energy
- Developing heat networks (e.g. expanding district heating in Neu-Ulmer town centre, local heating network of the Rattenberg municipality)
- The mobile transport of heat
- The integration of existing energy structures into a comprehensive, fit for the future energy concept (e.g. mobile heat transport for supply)
- SMART-grid project in conjunction with virtual power plants
- Working up targeted focuses of activity from the integrated energy and climate protection concept (Integrierten Energie- und Klimaschutzkonzept – IEKS)
We cooperated with leading research facilities and therefore, in future we will also be able to access current innovations, in order to solve local issues.
