In the latest episode of the EUWID Trash Talk podcast, Professor Nadine Warkotsch from the bifa Environmental Institute discusses how the circular economy is still lagging behind its actual targets in many areas. She argues that this is not due to a lack of technology, but rather to essential links within the value chain that are often missing. She emphasises the importance of chemical recycling, which should be used sensibly in certain contexts and areas of application.

A key concern for Professor Warkotsch is the reliability and predictability needed to cope with the growing complexity of the circular economy. A more positive attitude and cooperation between different players are crucial to successfully driving projects forward. Another aspect is regulation and constant changes to EU regulations such as the CSRD, ESRS and the Supply Chain Act. These changes require companies not only to keep up to date, but also to have specialised expertise. The question remains as to who will bear the costs of keeping up to date in consulting, especially if the required reporting is postponed. This raises the issue that many companies may have difficulty providing the necessary resources to meet the requirements, which could ultimately lead to a delay in the implementation of the desired goals.

With over 30 years of experience at the interface between the environment, technology and management, bifa Umweltinstitut GmbH provides practical support to companies on their way to robust and sustainable sustainability reporting.
