KlimKomHub
Identifying and overcoming barriers in climate communication
Good communication opens doors. That is why the KlimKomHub research project focuses on climate communication that motivates – close to the people, solution-oriented and locally anchored.
Why new approaches to climate communication are needed
Terms such as climate change, climate adaptation and climate protection are omnipresent in public debate. At the same time, they often have negative connotations and are abstract or far removed from the everyday lives of many people. At the local level in particular, this can lead to important projects for the future being met with scepticism or rejection.
However, a sustainable future can only be achieved if it is supported by society – through trust, dialogue, local commitment and participation.
Our approach: collaborative, local, positive
The KlimKomHub research project is rethinking climate communication:
- Collaborative, because good solutions arise from dialogue with citizens, businesses and local authorities
- Local, because every region has different needs, challenges and opportunities
- Positive, because communication should encourage and highlight opportunities and invite people to get involved – not scare them off
The aim is to develop communication formats that go beyond providing information, promote understanding, highlight concrete opportunities for action at the local level, strengthen social engagement and advance future projects.
Two model regions, many perspectives
In two model regions, specific projects are being communicated and developed further:
- City of Zwickau with a focus on climate-resilient urban development and green-blue infrastructure
- Allgäu with a focus on cross-sector projects at the interface of agriculture, forestry and tourism
In both regions, we are recording existing narratives, concerns, wishes and visions for the future and translating them into effective communication strategies. This creates a new form of climate communication that is scientifically sound, relevant to everyday life and easy to connect with.
From project to practice
The formats and methods developed in KlimKomHub are incorporated into a practice-oriented toolbox to support climate protection and climate adaptation managers in local authorities. This provides them with concrete tools to effectively communicate and implement their projects.
KlimKomHub stands for a new generation of climate communication: networked, positively motivating and solution-oriented. For a sustainable future that we shape together.
