PReFuCell project meeting at the bifa Environmental Institute

As part of the PReFuCell collaborative project, the technology behind reversibly operated fuel cells and other system components is being further developed.

Given the high volatility of renewable energy sources, flexible systems such as reversible fuel cells – as an innovative storage technology for the energy transition – are becoming increasingly important.

The project partners Reverion GmbH, Technical University of Munich (TUM), Chair of Energy Systems, smk systeme metall kunststoff GmbH & Co. KG and the bifa Environmental Institute met on 14 July 2026 for an initial working meeting at the bifa Environmental Institute in Augsburg.

As well as a presentation on the project’s progress to date, the meeting focused in particular on an in-depth technical exchange between the project partners. The enthusiasm and high level of motivation with which the individual partners are driving the tasks forward, even at this early stage of the project, were particularly impressive. The project meeting was organised by the project managers Dr Romy Heller (Reverion) and Markus Schönheits (bifa Environmental Institute).

As part of the project consortium, the bifa Environmental Institute is conducting a feasibility study on the material recycling of reversible solid oxide cell stacks (rSOC stacks). This involves carrying out a comprehensive study to characterise the stacks, as well as characterising the waste streams and their legal classification. Building on a market analysis for potential secondary raw materials and the identification of relevant materials through a hotspot analysis, a recycling process is being developed on a laboratory scale and its feasibility assessed.
